Foothill
Transit
Foothill
Transit was established in 1988. This innovative public/private
partnership serves over 16 million passengers in the San Gabriel
and Pomona valleys annually. It is the second largest fixed
route system in Los Angeles County, operating 259 buses and
covering 327 square miles.
Foothill Transit was recognized by the American Public Transit
Association (APTA) as the "Outstanding Transit System"
of its size. APTA has also recognized Foothill Transit with
a "Bus Safety Award," and the National Safety Council
of Greater Los Angeles has awarded Foothill Transit its First
Place Sweepstakes on three occasions.
Sunline
Transit
The
Sunline Transit Agency, serving the Coachella Valley, is a
worldleader in using and developing alternative fuel sources.
They started in 1994 by becoming the first public transit
system in the country to convert its entire fleet to Compressed
Natural Gas (CNG). This meant that Sunline had to jump in
with both feet. They worked with the College of the Desert
to establish a CNG training curriculum for mechanics and opened
up the first 24-hour public CNG
fueling station. This has led the way for their involvement
with several advanced fuel research projects with groups including
the Department of Defense and the Schatz Energy Research Center.
Sunline
Transit continues to lead the way in alternative fuels.
Their streetsweepers are all CNG powered. They just introduced
the deserts first CNG powered taxi, operated by Ace
Taxi, and set up a CNG fueling station at Waste Management
of the Desert to fuel the fleet of trash trucks. They also
provide CNG to the United States Postal Service to power their
fleet of 190 CNG-powered vehicles. In addition, they have
installed power in their bus shelters and are investigating
hydrogen fuel-cell-powered and electric transportation.
